Polish archaeologists return to Bornholm

"During archaeological studies we will prepare documentation of discovered items in 3D laser scanning technology. It is worth mentioning that in previous years we have used this innovative method to record the Inca sun temple in Cusco, Peru, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site" - told PAP the project leader Janusz Janowski from the 3D Scanners Laboratory of the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw.

The Danes recognised the high standard of the work of Polish experts and invited them to carry out studies within the largest monument on the island of Bornholm, and one of the greatest historical sites of Scandinavia, thirteenth-century castle Hammershus.

Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Foundation allocated DKK 92.5 million for extensive work. The three-year project includes archaeological research, architectural analysis, conservation. A new visitor centre integrated into the landscape will also be built. The complex was designed in 1971 by renowned architect Joern Utzon, designer of the famous Sydney Opera House.

"We will work in the centre of tourist attractions on Bornholm, often visited by Polish tourists" - added Marta Bura, Polish co-researcher.

This year, archaeologists from both countries strengthened the ties. An agreement on cooperation has been signed between the Bornholm Museum and the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw. For this reason, this year\'s field work will be visited by Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Vice-Rector for Academic Research and Cooperation at the University of Warsaw. This year\'s work will continue until the end of July.

According to Janowski, the construction of the castle began in 1250 on the order of the archbishop of Lund. Since ancient times, the island and the castle passed from the Swedish to Danish hands and vice versa several times. In 1743 the castle was demolished and part of the building material used to build the fortress on Christianso. During the Thirty Years\' War, Corfitz Ulfeldt and his wife Leonora Christina, half-sister of King Frederick III, were imprisoned in Hammershus. His betrayal and the service to King Charles X of Sweden contributed to Denmark losing the Danish-Swedish war (1643-1645) and signing an unfavourable peace accord in Bromsebro. Stronger Sweden had an open path to the Deluge in 1655.
