Prestigious award for the Polish film promoting the early days of Poland

The film "The Island of Lords" won the coveted ARKEOLAN award for "the most interesting presentation of the results of archaeological research". Laurel was awarded by the jury of the 13th International Archaeological Film Festival of the Bidasoa, held on 25-30 November in Basque Irun in Spain, told PAP Jakub Dzionek of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica.

In the finals, 24 productions by artists from Spain, France, Belgium, Portugal, the U.S., Canada, Egypt, Italy, and Poland were presented. The festival films competed for three trophies: the Grand Prize of the Festival, the ARKEOLAN Prize and the Special Audience Prize.

"The Island of Lords" is a historical documentary directed by Zdzisław Cozac. The director and Dr. Janusz Górecki are the authors of the script. The jury appreciated the vivid narration, dynamic pace and widely used computer image reconstruction, reproducing the topography of the island in the 10th-11th century.

The filmmakers show the sights of Ostrow Lednicki in Greater Poland. Based on studies, they present the most probable hypotheses of the events on the island, from the construction of bridges in 963 until the invasion of the Czech prince Bretislaus in 1039.

The author asked several scientists to speak in front of the camera. Among them are not only eminent archaeologists, including the late Prof. Zofia Kurnatowska and Prof. Andrzej Kola, but also historians, like Prof. Jerzy Strzelczyk, art historians, including Dr. Teresa Rodzińska-Chorąży and Dr. Tomasz Węcławowicz, as well as representatives of other disciplines that support modern archaeology.

The filmmakers have also shot difficult underwater scenes. The film completed with presentations of Mieszko I with Dobrawa, Bolesław the Brave and the Emperor Otto III, and battle scenes. The final effect was achieved with special effects in the form of modelling and animation of the Lednica castle and its facilities.

The production the initiative of Prof. Andrzej Wyrwa, director of the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica, who invited the director to work on the project. The film was made with financial support of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, useum of the First Piasts at Lednica and TVP Historia.
