Polish youth helping NASA

Five young Poles living in South Wales have contributed to the development of an app for the U.S. space agency (NASA), told PAP Mirco Cordeiroz from the Valleys Regional Equality Council.

Krystian Kobierecki, Dariusz Dominiak, Gabriela Misaczek, Jakub Misaczek and Mateusz Misaczek were testing the Space Place Prime application for iOS (for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV2), assessing its strengths and weaknesses. Their opinions turned out to be so valid that they also influenced the shape of other apps designed to promote the achievements of NASA and arouse interest in science, technology and mathematics.

Polish group received support from the project Priority 1 - Raising Skills and Aspirations of Young BME People II, funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.

This project aims to prepare young people belonging to ethnic minorities to enter the labour market, by developing self-confidence, hard and soft skills, and creating new opportunities.

According to senior development officer and a STEM ambassador Mirco Cordeiro, that although South Wales is one of the least developed areas of Europe, the project has proven that when young people face challenges and are given opportunities, they seize the opportunity with both hands to show that they can give something back to society.

"Taking part in this project allowed me to gain knowledge that will be useful in the future. Everyone dreams of working for NASA. I still can not believe that I got a certificate from them. I am very grateful for this unique opportunity" - said Jakub Misaczek, quoted in the release.

NASA Space Place team leader Nancy Leon thanked the Polish group for their contribution and confirmed that in February NASA would share the application version for Android.

The application will soon be available at http://spaceplace.nasa.gov/
