Polish cervical stent

Hybrid cervical stent that allows to more effectively stabilize atherosclerotic plaque at the site of implantation, and due to its pliability may be used in the case of complex changes in the carotid arteries, has been developed by Polish specialists.

Stent is a small spring placed inside a blood vessel that has been constricted or closed by atherosclerotic lesions.

"This type of stent’s shape better adjusts to the type of change, which helps to treat complicated cases. It also stabilizes plaque more effectively, reducing the risk of embolism and stroke. It helps treat more effectively"- said Prof. Paweł Buszman of the American Heart of Poland Clinics, who conducted the first implantation of the new stent in a patient with advanced heart and vascular disease in Ustroń (Silesia).

The patient was a 67-year-old man with bilateral carotid stenosis, with cardiac co-morbidities, qualified for cardiac surgery in the form of aortic valve replacement and coronary bypass. Complex cardiac surgery attempt such patient, without widening the carotid artery, however, would involve a very high risk of intraoperative stroke. In the near future, probably in about six weeks, carotid artery stenting procedure will allow to carry out the treatment more safely for the patient.

Hybrid carotid stents had previously undergone preclinical studies phase under the supervision of Dr. Krzysztof Milewski and Dr. Piotr Buszmana at the Research and Development Centre of the American Heart of Poland Clinics in Kostkowice, and clinical trials under the supervision of Dr . Przemysław Nowakowski in Małopolskie Heart and Vessels Center in Chrzanów. Treatments at each stage showed good therapeutic efficacy in all patients.

The stent has already obtained a European registration and was officially approved for marketing in Poland and the European Union. According to Prof. Buszman, its price will be lower than the price of foreign stents previously used in the Polish healthcare.
