Ranking: The University of Warsaw is the best university in Poland

University of Warsaw (UW) took first place in the Ranking of Higher Education Institutions "Perspektywy 2014", which evaluated 193 Polish universities. Second place went to the Jagiellonian University (UJ), and third to Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) in Poznań.

This year’s 15th edition of the ranking, prepared by the Educational Foundation "Perspektywy", included over 88 academic institutions, 80 non-public universities and 27 state higher vocational schools.

"In the ranking, for years we have two leaders, universities which are in the first two places, with a clear advantage over the other institutions: these are the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University. These two institutions exchange places every year, but really deserve a first place tie" - said President of the Polish Academy of Sciences and chairman of the jury Prof. Michał Kleiber.

President of the Educational Foundation "Perspektywy" Waldemar Siwiński noted that this year the University of Warsaw fared most evenly in all categories and this decided on its victory. "UW scored better than the Jagiellonian University in internationalisation and prestige of employers, and these categories are significant and have an effect on the result" - added Kleiber.

Next places in the top ten, after the University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University and AMU, went to Warsaw University of Technology, Wrocław University of Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology, University of Wrocław, Medical University of Warsaw, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poznan University of Medical Sciences.

Winner in the category of universities was the University of Warsaw, and in the category of technical universities - Warsaw University of Technology. In the group of business schools School of Economics in Warsaw ranked first, and among medical schools the Jagiellonian University Medical College. SGGW-WULS in Warsaw ranked first in the group of agricultural universities, and the Pedagogical University of Cracow won prevailed in the group of pedagogical universities. The best academy of physical education was the Academy of Physical Education in Wrocław, and not Józef Piłsudski University of Physical Education in Warsaw, as the organizers reported previously.

The first place among private masters colleges took Kozminski University in Warsaw (ALK), beating the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw. Next places among private universities with a mandate award at least master’s degree went to: Polish - Japanese Institute of Information Technology in Warsaw, Łazarski University in Warsaw, Vistula University, Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, University of Social Sciences in Łódź, University of Lower Silesia in Wrocław, University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów, Academy of Business in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

"Our position is the result of the professional university management. Already in 1995 we developed a strategy for the development of the university and noted that demographic decline was coming. We wondered how to protect against it and decided to internationalise the university and post-graduate studies. Now all universities must have such strategies, and we were the pioneers" - said the Kozminski University rector Prof. Witold Bielecki.

Winner in the ranking of state higher vocational schools was the President Stanisław Wojciechowski Higher Vocational State School in Kalisz. The next two places were taken by Pope John II State School of Higher Education in Biała Podlaska at the White Podlasie and the State Higher Vocational School in Tarnów.

The Foundation also prepared a ranking of 39 majors and fields of study. In eleven cases the winner was the Jagiellonian University (mainly in the medical sciences and humanities), in nine cases the University of Warsaw (the highest score in science and social sciences), and in seven cases Warsaw University of Technology (leader in the field of modern technology).

The jury also granted a special "Advancement" award for the most effective jump to the group of the best universities. Among the academic institutions, the award went to Poznań University of Technology for the jump from 22nd to 16th place, and among private universities to School of Banking in Poznań, moving up from 24th to 15th place. Award "Forge of Staff 2014" for the university, which with the greatest progress in the training of scientific personnel went to the University of Economics in Katowice.

The ranking was prepared under the supervision of the jury headed by the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Michał Kleiber. The jury members included Judge of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg Prof. Marek Safjan, honorary chairman of the jury, senator and chairman of the Polish Accreditation Committee Prof. Marek Rocki.

"The information provided by the ranking is invaluable for all who plan to start their studies. Beneficiaries are also the institutions themselves. The large number of criteria, which we take into account in the ranking, allows each university to realize what its weaknesses are" - said Kleiber.

He explained that 33 different criteria are used in the preparation of the ranking. "This number of criteria ensures a rational assessment of the quality of education. Our ranking is perhaps the most complex and comprehensive currently use ranking" - said the president of PAS.

Full ranking results have been published in the monthly magazine "Perspektywy", on www.ranking.perspektywy.pl website, as well as in "Dziennik Gazeta Prawna".
