University of Warsaw students 5th in the Collegiate Programming Contest

Team of programmers from the University of Warsaw won fifth place and silver medal in the world final of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC) in Russia. Students managed to solve five of the twelve problems.

122 student teams from around the world took part in the finals in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Three-person teams had one computer per team and five hours to solve algorithmic problems that could occur in real life. First place and $ 16.5 thousand prize went to the team from St. Petersburg State University.

University of Warsaw (fifth place) was represented by students from the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics (MIM UW): Jarosław Błasiok, Tomasz Kociumaka and Jakub Oćwieja. Teams that took places from fifth to eighth received silver medals and $ 4.5 thousand prizes.

Team supervisor Prof. Jan Madey of MIM UW said in an interview with PAP that the UW team solved five problems. "The boys were the first to solve one of the problems. This is also awarded" - he said.

Prof. Madey added that the problems this year were very difficult. "Among 12 problems were as many as four not one team could solve" - said the computer scientist. He also emphasised that approximately one-fourth of teams could not solve a single problem. "And yet they were the winners from all over the world! That shows the scale of the difficulty of these problems" - commented the team supervisor.

Team members could take part in the competition for the last time, because they will soon graduate. Prof. Madey noted, however, that one of the members of the team, Tomasz Kociumaka, already participated in the competition last year. UW team took 6th place.

"For 20 years we\'re in the finals every year. In this respect, there is no university in the world that could compete with us. Canadian Waterloo, who were head to head with us so far, did not make it to the finals this year" - Madey rated the UW participation in ICPC ACM.

Poland was represented in the finals by teams from two other Polish universities: the University of Wrocław and the Jagiellonian University. These teams did not manage to win medals.

ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM ICPC) is organized by the Association for Computing Machinery, an association of IT practitioners and theorists. It is the oldest and most prestigious and largest in terms of number of participants such competition in the world. Three-person university teams from around the world compete for the title. This year\'s finalists were selected in regional qualifying rounds on all inhabited continents. More than 32 thousand students from 2,286 universities in 94 countries competed.
