Students from Wrocław University of Technology best in Barcelona

Wrocław University of Technology students won the international Smart Moto Challenge 2014 in Barcelona. Their Light Electric Motorcycle defeated all the teams and this time - unlike last year - it returned safely to Poland.

Last year, students from Wrocław University of Technology finished third in this competition, but after the event their invention was stolen. This time there were no unpleasant surprises.

Poles won in the overall standings of the competition in which they faced 10 teams from Spain, Russia and Ecuador. The motorcycle built by members of the Vehicles and Mobile Robots Science Club WUT also received the award for the best business plan and design.

"We started the work on the motorcycle in October 2013. Our 15-person team has been meeting regularly since then. Apart from designing and constructing, we were also looking for business partners and dealt with the logistics of travelling to Spain" - said project coordinator Radosław Czahajda.

The winning vehicle has exceptionally low cost of ownership. "Brushless motor has been built into the hub of the wheel. With this solution, we do not have to worry about failure" - explains the project coordinator, adding that the motorcycle can ride up to 70 kilometres on a fully charged battery.

In October, the team from Wrocław University of Technology will compete in another competition in Moscow. "The motorcycle is great, but it could be even better. This is what we are going to work on now" - said Czahajda.
