More than PLN 100 million for green innovation for businesses

Businesses and scientific and industrial consortia can obtain more than PLN 100 million for research, development and implementation of innovative green technologies in the recently announced the "GEKON - Ecological Concept Generator" competition.

The competition is organized by the National Centre for Research and Development and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management. The agencies announced the second competition in this partner programme in a joint press release. According to the release, this is the first joint venture in Poland, which comprehensively finances the development of environmentally friendly technologies - from research concept to implementation.

"The development of modern environmental technologies is one of the key sectors of the economy of developed countries. Therefore, the support for the Polish industry based on knowledge in this area is an opportunity to build a competitive advantage in Europe and in the world" - said deputy director of the National Centre for Research and Development Leszek Grabarczyk, quoted in the release.

The program was created in response to tightening up EU regulations that force the Member States to develop waste management technologies and renewable energy. The agreement signed by the NRDC and the National Fund enables funding the solutions, which will allow Polish companies to effectively compete in the field of eco-innovation in the international arena. The budget of the entire program, which will run until 2019, is PLN 400 million.

In the competition, businesses and scientific and industrial consortia may apply for funding for research and development phase and implementation phase. The second competition budget for the R&D phase will be at least PLN 36 million, and PLN 160 million have been allocated to the implementation phase in the whole program (amount for both competitions). The call for proposals in this edition of the program is one-step, open until September 8.

The scope of the competition includes five areas related to the acquisition of unconventional gas, energy efficiency and energy storage, protection and rationalization of water use, obtaining energy from clean sources, as well as innovative methods of obtaining fuel, energy and materials from waste and recycled waste.

This year, the National Centre for Research and Development has already settled the first GEKON competition. 24 selected projects received a total of PLN 77 million for the research and development phase. Among the winning projects were: intelligent power socket, using innovative technology for acquisition and conversion of energy from renewable sources; the design of intelligent street lighting control system; the development and implementation of new technologies of small wind turbines, which can be used in home installations.
