American universities dominate the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2014

U.S. universities took almost all places in the top twenty of international CWTS Leiden Ranking 2014, which takes into account scientific publications of university employees and their impact on the development of world research. Top ranked Polish higher education institution is the University of Warsaw.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking measures the scientific activity of universities based on publications indexed in the Web of Science database and collaboration in research projects.

The ranking top 20 were almost exclusively universities in the United States. The first five places are Rockefeller University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University.

Highest ranked university outside the United States is the University of Cambridge, which took 19th place. Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne was ranked 21st.

The highest, 596th place among Polish universities took the University of Warsaw. 624th place went to Wrocław University of Technology, and 655th to Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Jagiellonian University was ranked 667th, and Warsaw University of Technology 712th. Also included in the ranking was AGH University of Science and Technology (727th place), and University of Wroclaw three positions below. The last included Polish university was Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, which took 741st place.

The ranking author, the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at the Dutch University of Leiden, is one of the most opinion-making research centres specialising in science policy and bibliometric research.
