Four Polish universities among the 500 most visible online

Only four Polish universities were among the world’s 500 most visible online universities - according to the latest edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. The best Polish university in the ranking, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, is in the 250th place.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities includes more than 20 thousand universities from around the world, including more than 455 Polish universities.

Polish university with the highest, 250th, position was Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, which advanced 294 positions since last year. Among the highest ranked 500 universities were also Jagiellonian University (299th place), University of Warsaw (335th place), as well as AGH University of Science and Technology (353rd place).

In the top 1000 were 12 Polish universities (also Warsaw University of Technology, Wrocław University of Technology, University of Silesia in Katowice, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, University of Wrocław, Silesian University of Technology, University of Łódź and Cracow University of Technology).

Top ranked were, as usual, American universities. The best was Harvard, followed by MIT and Stanford. Among the top 500 universities in the world, 143 universities are in the United States. In Europe, the best were Oxford (17th place) and Cambridge (18th place). Adam Mickiewicz University was 97th in Europe.

Webometrics World University Ranking is prepared twice a year by the CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, Spanish National Research Council) in Madrid. The comparison focuses primarily on university web communication. The rankings does not take into account scientific achievements, but rather materials published online by individual universities.

Aspects taken into account include impact (how often other sites redirect to the content on the university website), presence (the number of sub-pages in the domain which belongs to the university), openness (the number of documents, e.g. doc, pdf, available on the website), as well as excellence (participation of universities in the most cited scientific publications). The authors reserve that in particular editions the methods for evaluating universities may vary.
