Polish university and German institute founded Joint Labs

Poznań University of Technology and Leibniz Institute in Frankfurt (Oder) founded Joint Labs, which will carry out research focused on semiconductor materials and their physical properties. The results of the work of scientists will find applications in electronics, medicine, and photonics.

Joint Labs were officially opened on August 27 in Frankfurt (Oder). It is the first international project of Poznań University of Technology, consisting in mutual sharing of laboratories and their equipment for research purposes. The agreement will allow the University and the Institute to make savings on the purchase of specialized equipment.

For semiconductors, will the Joint Labs will focus on, include silicon, used on a large scale in the production of electronics.

Vice-rector for science at Poznań University of Technology, prof. Joanna Józefowska told PAP that the most important benefit from the project for the university, is access to modern laboratory infrastucture. "Construction of a similar laboratory at the university would be a very serious investment. Added value is working together with colleagues from Germany, which always brings positive results in scientific work" - added the vice-rector.

The list of topics that the researchers will address together is ready. These include the research on nano-objects built of graphene with dielectric objects (poorly conductive materials) visible with the naked eye. Scientists also want to develop new generation of so-called biosensors, which are used in medicine and biotechnology. Joint Labs will also carry out R&D work for the industry.

Poznań University of Technology plans to raise money for research at the National Science Centre and the National Centre for Research and Development. "International cooperation should also make it easier to obtain funds from the European Union" - added Józefowska.

Through practices program, Joint Labs will benefit students who will carry out engineering, master\'s and doctoral projects concerning materials useful in microelectronics based on silicon technology.

Cooperation between the university and the Leibniz Institute started in 2010. So far it has benefited more than a dozen students and several scientists. Opening of the Joint Labs was held during the international summer school of micro-and nanoelectronics, which took place in Frankfurt and Poznań. It was attended by about 30 people from different countries.

The opening ceremony was attended by the representatives of the German Ministry of Education and Research, the authorities of Frankfurt (Oder), Poznań and Wielkopolska. Full name of the project carried out by Polish and German scientists is Joint Labs "Functionalised surfaces and interfaces for semiconductor devices". (PAP)
