Polish honorary doctorates for Tomas Transtroemer

Swedish literature Nobelist Tomas Transtroemer will receive honorary doctorates from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and Silesian University in Katowice. The awarding ceremony will take place on Friday in Stockholm.

Transtroemer, 83, is one of the best-known Swedish poets. A psychologist by profession, his main theme is the clash between the human psyche and today\'s nature-distant civilisation. His 1954 debut volume entitled "17 poems" was considered one of Sweden\'s best newcomer publications of the decade.

Wheelchair-bound after a 1990 stroke, Transtroemer, who received the Nobel Prize in poetry in 2011, is also a translator of poetry, among others works by Polish poet and fellow Nobelist Czeslaw Milosz.
