The Mercudio app will help avoid traffic jams

Students from Łódź have developed an app that will help plan your trip more effectively. Young computer scientists describe their idea as "a modern version of CB-radio". After commercialisation, drivers will be able to talk to each other using smartphones connected to the Internet and exchange information about traffic jams, highway toll booth queues and accidents. They will also receive public announcements about traffic obstructions.

Students worked during the practices under the auspices of Microsoft in the labs the Faculty of Microelectronics and Computer Science, Łódź University of Technology. Their goal was to create an application that will introduce a new dimension of voice communication, adapted to the needs of modern society. The results will be marketed by the company.

"It\'s a modern version of CB-radio. Drivers can communicate with each other through voice messages, and they specify the radius in which they want to be heard. Users will also receive public announcements about traffic obstructions, without having to search for this information on the internet. They will also find out the length of queues to highway toll booths, which will allow them to better plan their journey" - says Mateusz Witomski, a computer science student at Łódź University of Technology.

The team also decided to adapt the application to the needs of those travelling by other means of transport. "We came to the conclusion that such an app is only a step away from a communicator that will be transmitting information available at train stations, bus train stations or airports" - explained Sylwana Kaźmierska, economic analysis student at the University of Łódź.

The project name is Mercudio. It is a combination of the name of the Roman god Mercury, mythical messenger, and the word "audio". The application will appear under this name in online stores. The work under the auspices of Microsoft has support of the company of Łódź University of Technology graduate and doctoral student, Marcin Franc-IT Consulting.

The authors want the app to be easy to use and intuitive. For the communicator good operation it is also important that many people use the application simultaneously. In addition to the version for Windows Phone 8.1, the team also develops applications for Android and iOS, expanding the group of potential users. Additional functionality should also attract users: the application can also double as a new form of initiating communication (for users who want to meet new people), and GPS signal will allow to check the distance between the user and the persons he or she communicates with.
