40 Universities of Young Inventors, in which universities will work with schools, and 9 Academic Creativity Centres educating future teachers have been selected by the Ministry of Science in competitions designed to strengthen the cooperation between schools and universities.

Universities of Young Inventors and Academic Creativity Centres have been organized in the framework of the project "Creative Pupil, Student, Citizen". "The idea of both programs is this: we link high school to universities" - Minister of Science and Higher Education Lena Kolarska-Bobińska said during a meeting with journalists.

In the programme Universities of Young Inventors, the competition jury selected 40 projects. Each of them will receive up to PLN 50 thousand funding for the implementation of proposed research projects, which the universities will conduct together with schools and their students.

"These are projects in various fields of science. Under the guidance of scientists, students will analyse the impact of pollution on the environment, designed spatial development, write articles for scientific journals, participate in workshops developing mathematical skills" - described Minister of Science.

She emphasized that universities have very good laboratories that can be used for the students who are curious about the world and science. "We believe that we need to create new patterns, encourage university professors to share their knowledge with high school students. It is very natural in many schools in Western Europe that professors also teach in high schools. It is not on a mass scale, but it is worth it to break the barrier that teaching in school is depreciating. The more that it also changes students who are informed, open-minded, curious about the world" - said Kolarska-Bobińska.

Universities of Young Inventors will operate at universities in Warsaw, Poznań, Katowice, Kraków, Wrocław, Białystok, Gdańsk, Sopot, Łódź, Nowy Sącz, Lublin, Toruń, Chełm. The total budget of the program will be PLN 2 million.

In the second competition, the Ministry of Science selected nine Academic Creativity Centres, which will be established at eight universities in the country. Each such centre will receive up to PLN 250 thousand, which can be spent on inviting visiting professors, necessary software or analyses.

Ministry of Science assumes that the selected centres will be model teacher training centres. They will develop teaching methods for teacher and student work in different areas of science: natural sciences, humanities, social studies, science, medicine, health sciences, physical education and art. The students - future teachers - will learn how to develop skills such as teamwork, how to deal with conflict in the classroom, manage a group, create curricula, manage the process of learning.

The centres will operate at Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities, Eugeniusz Piasecki University School of Physical Education in Poznań, University of Gdańsk, A. Mickiewicz University in Poznań, University of Silesia, Kazimierz Wielki University, M. Grzegorzewska Academy of Special Education, and two at the Jagiellonian University. The budget of the programme amounts to PLN 2.5 million. It is implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of National Education.

Both programs are financed from the Innovative Economy Operational Programme and will continue until November 2015.
