Poland has invested heavily in infrastructure in recent years, now we need to invest in people - said Minister of Science Lena Kolarska-Bobińska at the opening of two new buildings of the . "We can not afford loosing talent" - she stressed.

Last week on Wednesday, the University of Warsaw opened the new seat of the Faculty of Physics and the Centre of New Technologies.

Minister of Science and Higher Education Lena Kolarska-Bobińska reminded that in recent years, Poland has invested PLN 29 billion in infrastructure, 7 billion in Mazowsze alone. "But now is the time to start thinking what projects to pursue, how to obtain grants to fill these buildings with even greater international and Polish teams" - she noted. She admitted that the previous years were a time of catching-up in terms of infrastructure. "Now we have to - I\'m fully aware of this - invest in intellectual capital, the people" - she noted. She expressed the hope that the projects conducted in the new facilities will include both basic research and industrial implementations.

According to the head of the ministry, the laboratories will also benefit students who will be involved in the projects. She reminded that her department now runs the campaign "Occupation: Scientist" that shows how fun being a scientist can be. "We can not afford loosing talent today" - she said.

UW Rector Prof. Marcin Pałys noted that the new buildings may help to integrate the Warsaw scientific community. He reminded that the new buildings are located on campus in Ochota, which is home to not only other UW faculties, but also various institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Medical University of Warsaw. "Every sixth unit with the scientific category A+ (the highest possible rating of research unit - PAP) in Poland is within five minutes from here" - he concluded. He pointed out that both the Faculty of Physics and the Centre of New Technologies also received the highest scientific category.

Rector drew attention to the importance of research, which combines different scientific fields. "I will strongly support interdisciplinary projects" - he undertook. He noted that the reality is not divided into fields, and that when you conduct research, it is best to look at it from different perspectives. Therefore - in his opinion - cooperation is needed between researchers.

The new 23 thousand sqm building of the Faculty of Physics houses modern laboratories, library and classrooms. After the University of Warsaw Library and linguistic divisions in Powiśle it is the second campus building, on the roof of which you can walk - wooden terraces are open. The Faculty of Physics used to be in the center of Warsaw, in the 90-year-old building on Hoża street.

The Centre of New Technologies is the newest unit of the University of Warsaw, established in 2011. The purpose of the Centre is to educate leaders for business and science and conduct interdisciplinary research at the frontier of biology, chemistry, physics and information technology. The Centre’s activities include teaching, research, implementation and services in the field of mathematics and natural sciences.

The research projects carried out at CeNT concern in particular molecular biology of particular importance for medicine and the environment. Another subject is the analysis of the structures of chemical compounds and materials. The Centre will also develop new materials, information technology, physics applications for the needs of modern technology.

Both buildings were financed from EU funds under the Operational Programme "Infrastructure and Environment". The cost of the two investments amounted to PLN 280 million.
