Multinational company Thales and AGH University of Science and Technology signed a cooperation agreement. The agreement provides for the development of joint research projects in the field of modern technologies and scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.

The agreement was signed in the main AGH building by representatives of the university authorities and the French company with an international reach. The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of France in Poland, Pierre Buhler.

The agreement initiators emphasize that the bilateral cooperation will benefit primarily the university students and graduates. The agreement provides for the organization of practices and internships, as well as assisting in the preparation of research projects of students and young academics.

AGH and Thales joint projects will concern the development possibilities of the space sector, defence, security and intelligent transport systems (ITS).

"AGH is entering the area of new technologies, including space technologies; in Poland this industry is at an early stage. Cooperation with Thales, the largest manufacturer of telecommunications and scientific satellites, gives us great advantage" - told PAP Polish co-initiator of the agreement, Prof. Tadeusz Uhl from the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics at AGH.

Thales Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, Marko Erman noted that his company is already developing joint projects with more than 50 major universities and research laboratories in Europe, the United States, the Middle East and Asia.

Thales country director in Poland Paweł Piotrowski, who attended the meeting, emphasised that Thales "invests 20 percent of its annual revenues in research and development". Piotrowski expressed the hope that as a result of the agreement, the best AGH graduates will join his company; according to him, next year Thales Polska intends to hire 20 to 50 engineers.

The agreement between the two sides has been achieved with the support of the French diplomatic missions in Poland and the French Institute.

Thales is a global technology leader in the aerospace, defence, transportation and security markets. In 2013, the company generated revenues of EUR 14.2 billion, operating in 56 countries.
