Over 24 thousand foreign students from 141 countries are currently enrolled in Polish universities, the Perspektywy Education Foundation informed Tuesday in a report.
The report authors remark that the foreign student population is almost 4,000 higher than last year but note that foreign students account for no more than 1.39 percent of all students in Poland.
Most foreign students in Poland come from Ukraine (6,321) and Belarus (2,937). Compared to the global average Poland has relatively few Asian students - 565 from China, 533 - from Taiwan, 215 from India and 197 from Vietnam.
Perspektywy Foundation head Waldemar Siwinski said Poland needed to attract more foreign students. Among the obstacles in this respect he named failing instructions in English and insufficient foreign teaching staff. "We are still learning to operate English-language teaching programmes and schools with bilingual instructions - in Polish and English - to enable foreigners to move around better, can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Polish universities should also employ more foreign staff" Siwicki said.
Almost 80 percent of Poland foreign students are enrolled in public schools, over 28 percent study economy and business, over 26 percent medicine, 11 percent technical faculties and over 8 percent social sciences.
