Depression + erectile dysfunction = heart disease

Symptoms of depression in men with erectile dysfunction increase the risk of heart disease - showed a recent study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Symptoms of depression are often associated with erectile dysfunction. This combination results in an increased risk of heart disease and death. Furthermore, in order to examine the clinical connections, researchers led by Elis Bandini from the University of Florence examined nearly 2,000 male patients from a sexual dysfunction treatment clinic. They used a structured interview method, during which they also detected symptoms of depression - informed EurekAlert service.

The results show that erectile dysfunction connected with depression increases the cardiovascular system problems regardless of other risk factors. Moreover, even taking antidepressants does not alter the relation between severe symptoms of depression and cardiovascular diseases.

"The diagnosis of depression symptoms in patients with erectile dysfunction is necessary not only to improve sex life, but also to prevent heart disease - said Bandini.

"Important in these studies is a broader concept of sexual and medical problem that concerns not only the bedroom, but also the psychological mood of a man and his cardiovascular health. This is an important reason for women to encourage their partners to treat disorders" - said Irwin Goldstein, chief editor of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, and director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego.
